只用whether不用if的九种情况：引导的从句作介词宾语；引导宾语从句，句子置于句首表强调；和动词不定式连用；与or not连用；引导主语从句，从句位于句首；引导表语从句；引导让步状语从句作“不管”讲；句中已有if引导的状语从句或容易造成歧义的情况下，如表达“是否”的意思时最好用whether；在discuss后面只能跟whether引导的宾语从句。

以下9种情况下只用whether不用if

1.所引导的从句作介词宾语时，只用whether。

I worry about whether I hurt her feelings.

我担心我是否伤害了她的感情。

2.引导宾语从句，句子置于句首表强调时，只用whether。

Whether this is true（or not），I can’t tell.

我不知道这是不是真的。

3.和动词不定式连用时，用whether，不用if。

I don’t know whether to see my doctor today.

我不知道今天是否去看医生。

4.直接与or not连用时，用whether，不用if。

Can you tell me whether or not the rain has left？

你能告诉我雨是否已经下了吗

5.引导主语从句时，从句位于句首用whether，不用if。

Whether she likes the present is not clear to me.

我不清楚她是否喜欢这份礼物。

6.引导表语从句时，用whether，不用if。

His first question was whether Holmes had arrived yet.

他的第一个问题时福尔摩斯是否已经到了。

7.引导让步状语从句，作“不管”解释时，用whether不用if。

Whether you like it or not,you’ll have to do it.

不管你愿不愿意，你都得做这件事。

8.如果句中已有if引导的状语从句，最好用whether，以避免重复if。或在容易造成歧义的情况下，如表达“是否”的意思时，最好用whether。

He asked me whether,if I had time,I’d go with him.

9.在discuss后面只能跟whether引导的宾语从句。

We discussed whether we should close the shop.
